New to Swimming Class? A Parent’s Checklist and Common Questions Before You Enrol

Enrolling your child in swimming class for the first time? Many parents feel a bit lost: what gear do you need? What should you expect from the first lesson? What if your child cries? Here’s everything WeBorn Swim Academy parents ask most often, so you can walk in feeling prepared.

1. What to Bring to Class

Essentials:

  • A well-fitting swimsuit (a one-piece is easier for young children and won’t slip)
  • Swimming goggles (look for an adjustable nose strap and soft silicone seal that won’t press on the eyes)
  • A swim cap (a must for children with long hair, to keep hair out of the eyes and drains)
  • A large towel or robe (children get cold quickly leaving a warm pool for cooler air)
  • Sandals or slippers (poolside floors are wet and slippery)
  • A clean change of clothes

Nice to have:

  • A waterproof bag for wet swimwear
  • A light snack and water (swimming burns a lot of energy)
  • Ear plugs (if your child is prone to ear infections, check with your doctor)

WeBorn uses heated indoor pools, so sunburn and cold water aren’t a concern — sunscreen usually isn’t needed.

2. What to Expect at the First Lesson

Arrive 10-15 minutes early so your child has time to get familiar with the space and change without rushing. New environments take a little time to get used to.

Your own mood matters a lot. Even if your child cries, try to stay calm and encouraging. Children are very sensitive to adult tension — the more anxious you look, the more afraid of water they’ll feel.

Don’t put pressure on your child. The goal of lesson one isn’t to “learn” anything specific — it’s for your child to feel that water is fun and their coach can be trusted.

3. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My child is scared of water and cries constantly — can they still learn?

Yes. Fear of water is a stage almost every child goes through. With the right approach and small steps, most children adapt within 3-8 lessons. Small class sizes matter most here, since coaches can pay attention to each child’s emotional state. (Want more detail? Read our article on helping a child who’s afraid of water.)

Q: What’s the best age to start swimming lessons?

There’s no fixed minimum age. 4-23 months is the “water familiarisation” stage, 2-5 years is the key period for building basic water safety skills, and 5-12 years is when kids begin systematic stroke training. It’s never too late to start.

Q: How long does it take to learn?

Both our adult and children’s programmes target “basic swimming competence within 3 months”, though actual progress depends on lesson frequency and how comfortable your child already is in water.

Q: How often should we come each week?

1-2 times a week is the ideal frequency — leaving too long a gap means kids lose their feel for the water. WeBorn’s classes are lesson-based, so a missed session can be made up rather than forfeited.

Q: My child has sensitive skin — will pool chlorine be a problem?

WeBorn uses advanced water filtration systems (some branches with UV sterilisation), keeping chlorine levels lower than most pools and gentler on skin and airways.

WeBorn Swim Academy has focused on children’s and baby swimming since 2010, with heated indoor pools, small class sizes, and our exclusive WeBorn Path curriculum. We have 4 branches in Johor: Taman Putri Kulai, Kulai IOI Palm Villa, Gelang Patah, and Skudai Sutera Sport World.
